Change Conference 25/26 January 2024 in the Kollegienhaus of the University of Basel
External threats such as the coronavirus and the war in Europe are activating internal psychological dynamics and processes. What are the effects on the psychological functioning of individuals and social relationships, both in the private sphere and in groups or organisations? The author examines how the external influences, some of which are unprecedented, interfere with our psychological structure and the processes that take place within it. On the one hand, it is about dealing with potential sensory overload and overwhelm, and on the other about the inner dynamics of rebellious urges, an aggressive conscience and an overburdened, controlling ego. Added to this is the activation of specific unconscious fantasies of desire and fear that are inherent in development. The effects of the current situation on the mental balance of the individual and (power) relationships in groups and organisations as well as the possible dangers and opportunities for development are discussed.

Grotesque, social satire or screwball comedy? Director Pedro Almodóvar refuses to be categorised in any particular genre. On the surface, women see red in this turbulent film and (almost) go completely crazy. Is it chance or an unconscious sexual and aggressive fantasy that controls this chaos? One surprise follows the next, situation comedy, wordplay, the power of the voice – a panopticon of over-the-top sensuality. The film is a treasure trove of different cinematic languages, a love of detail in the set design and colour scheme, a reference to great role models such as Hitchcock or Hollywood melodramas. Obsessions, relationship entanglements, hysteria under the magnifying glass – there is plenty to discuss here from a psychological point of view.
